If Your Gut Could Talk

Updated: Jul 27, 2023

Healthy foods help your gut diversity, health, microbiome, gastrointestinal gi system for you and the gastroenterology doctor

If you could speak to your gut, what would you tell it?

Perhaps:

  • Why do you always make weird noises at the worst moments?

  • Why can't you handle spicier foods?

  • Why do you cause me pain sometimes?

Thankfully, a gastroenterologist can answer many of these questions on behalf of your gut.

However, if your gut could speak, here are a few things it'd want to say to you:

Dear Body,

Slow Down When You're Eating!

I know that sometimes you're in a rush. However, if you eat or drink too fast, I can't help getting hiccups! Hiccups aren't fun for either of us. Just slow down a little, and avoid eating while lying down.

When you eat too quickly, I worry about choking too. Food might get stuck in your airway, making it hard for you to breathe. Take the time to cut your food into small enough pieces, and ensure you're chewing your food enough before swallowing it. Try to avoid talking or laughing before swallowing.

Be Wary of New Foods

New food is fun and exciting! But sometimes, it can be a little hard for me to get used to it. If you start with small amounts of new food, especially new foods high in fiber, it'll make it easier for me to process these new foods and make you less gassy.

However, if you're noticing a pattern of being gassy or in pain after eating a specific food, be sure to avoid it.

Portion Out Your Meals

When you eat or drink too much, it's hard for me to process everything. Overeating usually ends up causing you heartburn because your stomach gets too full, and it ends up squeezing some food back into the esophagus. Excess body fat can also squeeze my stomach a bit.

Try to eat smaller meals, wear loose clothing, and sit up and relax after eating.

Make healthy lifestyle choices too! Smoking and overconsumption of alcohol and carbonated beverages can also cause heartburn.

Listen to How I'm Feeling

Everybody experiences some abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, or constipation occasionally. Sometimes it's just something you ate or a temporary side effect of your new medications.

However, if you're constantly experiencing stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, or other stomach ailments, it's time to visit your local gastroenterologist. GI problems are more common than you may think.

Best Wishes,

Your Digestive Tract
